Bad Spelling Costs Big Bucks

As a teacher, I would often hear the question, “Does spelling count?” Apparently it does in online business.

This article from the BBC News reports that spelling errors on commercial websites can cut sales by as much as half.

We can’t know why for sure, but the logical explanation is that people who see obvious errors in usage and/or spelling become skeptical about a business’s legitimacy.

The point is, sound grammar and mechanics skills are valuable in the marketplace. The last bit of the article bemoans the poor writing skills of the average job applicant today. Solid writing skills are important for a variety of reasons, including value in a competitive job market. Businesses need people who can write with clarity and attention to standard English conventions.

And this goes without saying, but I happen to know of a great place for students to develop just these kinds of skills!
